It won't hurt the gun but I can't see any reason for alternating buckshot with slugs. Most states that require the use of a shotgun for deer hunting, such as here in Indiana, buckshot is not allowed anyway. If you are doing it for defensive purposes, just go with the buckshot. it is plenty powerful medicine for that purpose.

In Missouri it is illegal to use anything other than slugs in a shotgun while hunting deer. When you shoot "shot" down a rifled shotgun barrel the "shot" will make an "O" shape while it flies through the air... not very practical. But with 00 buck it may be different... "buck shot" is different than regular "shot" in that it has to be carefully packed into the shell because it is so much bigger is diameter. And since it is only your choke that is rifled you can most likely get away with it... especially with larger 00 buck size ammo. Just curious - is this for self defense purposes? I live in Missouri so I can't deer hunt with buck shot but I could possibly see the reasoning for alternating between the two if I was being attacked and needed to defend myself or my family.

yes, the only thing that you need to be sure of, when shooting slugs or buckshot,is don't use a "full" choke. This can result in shooting the choke out of the shotgun ( making it more of an open choke, not physically causing the choke to exit the barrel) or damage to the barrel or worse. I also found that this applies to fshooting steel shot, a full choke is a no no.

YES..You can But..You are going to find that in the most states that for hunting purposes, Buckshot isn't allowed to be used hunting Deer. There would be no legal reason to mix them in these states, legal or not
If you are talking Personal protection or Self-defence it's perfectly reasonable to mix buckshot with slugs or other mixed shells, but again there is no logical reason to shoot Buckshot out of a rifled slug barrel.....Use a smoothbore barrel with modified choke to shoot Regular slugs and Buckshot mixed.....
NOTE* I have a Remington 870 with magazine extension loaded with Buckshot and Slugs every other shot for my own home defense use (Modified Choke of course)...Stops the bad guys AND their getaway cars if need be..lol
LONNIE P..FYI there are only (9) states in the entire U.S. that allow the legal use of "BUCKSHOT" for hunting.....Hardly a majority or "most" lol

It is safe to shoot OO buck out of any choke barrel, provided it is the right gauge shells you are using for the gun.

There is no reason you shouldn't be able to alternate 00 buck and slugs in this set-up. The buckshot is for shorter range shots, the slug for 100-150 yd shots.
Perfectly acceptable, perfectly legal, and makes perfect sense; I and several of my partners do it all the time; it works out well.
Actually, JD, most states ENCOURAGE the use of OO buck for deer -- shorter range.

I think the real question here should be why on earth would you want to alternate loads? It serves no purpose whatso-ever in real world situations.
