Democratic?

"Phelps has run in various Kansas Democratic Party primaries five times, but has never won. These included races for governor in 1990, 1994, and 1998, receiving about 15% of the vote in 1998. In the 1992 Democratic Party primary for U.S. Senate, Phelps received 31% of the vote Phelps ran for mayor of Topeka in 1993 and 1997."

So you can't draw conclusions about a political party based on one nutjob - but you are perfectly happy to draw conclusions about an entire religion based on the very same nutjob?? HmMmmm....

I don't think you can draw a correlation between political parties and and individual nutcase like Phelps or his cult. The real issue is why these people think they have the right to disrespect the memory of people who have died in the service of their country - whether you agree with the war or not, saying that "soldiers dying in Iraq is God's punishment for homosexuality" is as much a hate crime as any other that has been prosecuted. The guy is a freak show.

No, no longer likely. Dems are a great tent occasion. "for the duration of the 1992 presidential marketing campaign, Phelps protested Hillary Clinton for the duration of a marketing campaign speech in help of the Clinton-Gore value ticket on the college of Kansas on October 14, 1992. In bill Clinton's 2d presidential marketing campaign, Phelps and the Westboro church additionally unfavourable Clinton and Gore as a results of administration's help for gay rights. the entire Westboro congregation picketed a 1997 inaugural ball[40 4], denouncing Gore as a "famous fag pimp."[40 5] In 1998, Westboro picketed the funeral of Gore's father, screaming vulgarities at Gore and telling him, "your dad's in Hell." incredibly?

Yes, it surprised me.
I also think Brother Michael and Veritas made interesting suggestions. Phelps and the clan had to have known that their actions might one day lead to civil or criminal court. They must have started out with a "Plan B" already in place.

I have just posted a question regarding this subject. I honestly don't care what political party this "man" was or is a member of. I am not going to judge a particular political party by one man's beliefs. It is a ridiculous question. It points out (or you are just trying to stir the pot) that a percentage of people, either didn't know to much about this "man", OR they agreed with his beliefs. That does not make any particular party, Republican or Otherwise, guilty for spreading the hate of this particular "man".
VERITUS - You must be kidding! Wow, your Dad must be quiet a "man".

I think I brought this fact to light yesterday or the day before in another question. That is why I wonder whether this whole thing is a ruse, an attempt to paint Christians as haters and nuts.

I think there are complete wackos calling themselves all sorts of things.
It by no means represents the rest of the Democrats, if that's what you are hinting at.

Dems don't hate gays---Republicans do.

BrotherM--it is not a ruse.
Those filthy hate spewers came to a funeral just down the road from my house. Fortunately, our sheriff (who had just returned from Iraq himself) forced them to stay out of sight of the mourners through the use of a little-known law.

My father has a theory about Fred Phelps.

He thinks they are front group for gay activists. The idea being they give Christians such a bad name that people feel sorry for gays and rally around them, thus a victory for gays.

Now your question has really got me seriously thinking about my father's theory.

I don't think anyone has criticized his politics... Its his bizzaro religious views and his complete disrespect for people grieving that are the problem.

Would it surprise you to know that Charles Manson is a republican...
