Bible doesn't address this topic, however taking control of our thoughts Rom 12:2 is another thing. It is not only the act but what you are thinking of while you are doing it. Bible also talks about self control which is one of the fruits of the spirit in Gal 5:16 If you are masturbating, then you are also taking that from your wife. Your wife should be taking care of you so that you need not do that. Pray about it, if you feel convicted (which I am sure you are because you would not have even asked this question), and then obey! Good luck and God bless you.

which of the 10 commandments says masturbation is a sin? Not in my bible do they include it. Nor do the teachings of jesus. Maybe what you are hearing is what prudes choose to believe their misreadfing of the bible says.

Sin: when you intentionally do something you know is wrong
According to Christians, It is a sin to masturbate because sex is supposed to be uniting man and woman in body and soul to create new life and to make a stronger bond with your spouse. When you masturbate, you are having sex with yourself; therefore, not participating in uniting man and woman to create new life and not growing in a relationship with your spouse.
It is right up there with premarital and extramarital sex.
When making a test tube baby, like Peter Priesthood said, it is okay because you participating in the creation of a human life. You are going to take care of this baby with your spouse and it will bring you closer together. The sperm and the egg (man and woman) still unite as one.

If you'd like a serious answer, I will give you one from my Catholic perspective.
It is considered a sin because it is a sexual act outside of the marriage act. So even if you were thinking of your wife while doing it, you are still acting alone and without her, so yes it would be a sin.
And as to how sin affects God, it displeases Him. No, He does not cry everytime a sin is committed. Rather, He is offended by it, because committing a sin is so against what we as humans are called to do in this life. Sin robs us of our dignity.
But we should never despair. Instead, we should be the one to shed a tear, say we are sorry and ask God to help us do better. And He will.
