I highly recommend that you use head lice shampoo on your dogs. It is VERY effective at killing fleas. I like using that to kill fleas instead of using the common dog flea shampoo that is often too watery and has to be used more than once to kill the fleas. Head lice shampoo contains the same stuff that flea shampoo contains, except its stronger. Your dog's skin will not be harmed in anyway shape or form.
Any head lice shampoo will do, but I think that the NIX brand head lice shampoo is the best.
This is safe to use around your children because it is often used ON children who are sent home from school because of head lice, or the schools use them on the kid and send him or her back to class.

I'm afraid decent flea treatment doesn't come cheapest. Frontline is probably the cheapest that actually works. You get it on the animal's SKIN, not fur, and the animal will be covered for at least a month. HOWEVER you will still continue to see fleas if you do not spray your house at least once.

I would stay far away from Hartz if I were you, it has the worst reputation of any flea product in America - www.hartzvictims.com, surprised no one's mentioned it yet!

Store-bought products are the cheapest, but since they don't tend to work, and are often dangerous, they're actually the biggest waste of money. Stick with Frontline, or Revolution, Advantage or Advocate and get a proper treatment for your house - i.e a veterinary spray, not salt or Borax!

There is a new house spray out called Skoosh - it's pesticide free, so good if you're concerned for safety/the environment.

Chalice

EDIT: In response to your additional details - as I said, store bought treatments don't work, and this includes bombs.

Dip the dogs and board them while you treat your house. Fleas are aggressive little bastards, so you have to get aggressive right back.

Wash everything that is washable, generously sprinkle borax on your carpet and furniture, and vacuum after about 20 minutes. And keep vacuuming every day for at least 2 weeks (about the life-cycle of a flea). For treating the yard, you might want to get professional help. Or you could try gardening: There are a number of aromatic herbs that fleas don't like.

Help your mother do the same with her place, if you can: She's bound to be miserable.

Good luck!

you need to take all living things out of the house for a few hours and bomb it, or get a company to do it. you also need to clean everything. all furniture, clothing, bedding, anything the dogs have touched needs to be throoughly cleaned. you will also need to treat your yard, and your cars (if the dogs have been in them. is it cheap? probably not. after you do all that, then put advantage or frontline on them.

flea collars dont work, and if you take the dog to a groomer, make sure they use a natural flea shampoo. a "flea dip" is made of very toxic stuff, and can cause damage. any shampoo will get rid of fleas as long as it is left on long enough

With the dogs the only thing that will truly work is a flea dip. This would be done by a grooming professional. All of your belongings need to be washed in very warm water. Anything that has fleas. Anything that can not be washed needs to be thrown away. Then if your mother has pets you need to call animal control on her because that is wrong.

You could try natural defense. Another good veterinarian brand of flea stuff is revolution. But you'll probably have to do your whole house at the same time if you want to get rid of them once and for all.

If you have kids under 15, just make it a funny game!!
Call it a "Flea Jungle Hunt".
One kid can remove up to 743 fleas a day.
Late Entry : kid's over 20 have already poorer vision.

1. Talk to the vet about flea treatment.
2. CLEAN. Do laundry it hot water. Clean and vacuum everything. This part can be kid friendly too. :)
