What does "washing the mouth with soap" mean in your house? Did it work with your kids? Will you repeat it if they swear?

I have not. I couldn't even if I wanted to since I am a foster parent.

However, my mother's technique was very very effective for me. She took a bar of soap and my toothbrush and when I used foul language I got to brush my teeth with my own toothbrush that had soap on it. She would set the timer and I had to brush with suds and all that for 30 seconds... trust me that is plenty of time. And no matter how many times you rinse your toothbrush it tastes like soap for a long time. And sometimes I gagged and almost thew up... but it worked for me. I still don't cuss around my mom and I am 32 years old. LOL

In my house it means you said something highly inappropriate so you trot your rude little self to the bathroom swipe your tongue 1 time with a bar of soap wait about 30 seconds and rinse like crazy. It works really well. My son dropped the Fbomb a few week ago courtesy of his uncle and has yet to say so much as crap since then. It isn't something horrid like making them eat the soap or hold it in the mouth for extended periods of time. Some soap is worse than others. My mom favored Lava the really rough hand soap. I have never used or had used on me liquid soap there is too much of a chance for using too much or swallowing it.

I have never washed my kids' mouths out with soap becuase, well they're not quite old enough to talk - my daughter is 2 and I'm 5 months pregnant with our second. lol. When I was a kid however, my parents DID wash our mouths out with soap if we swore - eeeyuck. At our house that entailed putting liquid soap in your mouth and then rinsing it out with water (not swallowing it). The only time it ever happened to me was when I said the word crap. Guarantee ya I never swore again around my parents or at all really...lol.

When I was little, my grandmother did this to me. She held me over the sink and the bar of soap (Irish Spring I remember to this day) rubbed it over my mouth and lips like washing, so not actually in my mouth but I could still taste it. She only did it only, maybe she felt guilty but it worked for me!

I think the liquid soap is a bit much but I like the toothbrush idea! I think in order for me to do this to my daughter itd have to be really bad.

In my house, I got my mouth "washed out" once. My mom takes the squirty soap and squirts one squirt into our mouths. Then she lets us decide how to get the soap out. I think it is a fair punishment for backtalking or swear words.

confident. That became a undemanding element while i became baby. little ones who had a potty mouth have been given it washed out with cleansing soap. A bar of cleansing soap for the duration of your tongue as quickly as with a number of it hitting your tooth specific cleans up the language.

don't do it.
its not necessary.
i have gotten my mouth washed out with soap many many times and it doesnt work. it makes me wanna curse MORE.
what my parents did was we had to put our allowance in the curse jar everytime something as little as "stupid" was said around my little bro.
and, we got grounded.
which worked.
trust me, i am a stubborn teen. and it changed my vocabulary.
also, you wouldnt want your kids to dispise you.
-good luck.

ps.-that would also be wasting soap.

I never had that done to me, but I understand if was a old time solution to teach children not to lie or to swore. I think it is barbaric. But I've seen some children I could willingly do it to.
