paxil is supposedly the first and the best ssri for anxiety however it is notorious for causing excessive weight gain and is difficult to withdraw off of. zoloft has really helped me alot with my anxiety and didnt cause as much weight gain although it did cause a little.

My daughter was put on Paxil for depression a few months ago. It worked at first and then after about 3 months she became super irritable and had suicidal thoughts a lot (this is a side effect of Paxil sometimes). I weaned her off of it and am trying alternative things instead. So far, my daughter is much better off without the antidepressant. So, I vote "NO" on Paxil. Too risky.

Actually, a good anti-depressant with an anti-anxiety effect is Lexapro, which is relatively new. It has a low incidence of side effects for most people.

Only your doctor can help you decide what's right for you, and it might take some time and a bit of trial-and-error. If something has worked well or not worked well for an immediate family member, the doctor would want to know that. Some generalists don't have a lot of experience with anti-depressants other than the most-commonly-used ones, so you may need to be persistent and may need to consult with a psychiatrist if you aren't getting anywhere with your doctor.

I hated Paxil. I hated Zoloft. Both of them gave me suicidal thoughts.

The only thing that worked for me was Lexapro. It is much more mild and has less harsh side effects and withdrawl symptoms.

I would always follow up and research the meds your doc gives you. Your doc may think it is right, but you may find something else that could work better for you, or at least find out if there are side effects that you are prone to that these meds can cause.

I researched Lexapro and suggested my doctor switch me to that one. Paxil nearly killed me and you have to take it for a long time and try multiple doses in order to figure out what is right for you. I started at 10mg and the doc quickly doubled and redoubled the dose until i felt like jumping out of a building. I was on Lexapro 10mg for less than a year when I was finally released from it. I never had to change dosage.

Zoloft has been an absolute life saver for me. In the beginning it was a little ruff. I thought it was making me worse, but that was all in my head. I was just paranoid about starting it. I gave it a chance to set in and it did. I've been on it for a little over two months. It doesn't cause weight gain. Over eating causes weight gain. You feel better so you eat more than when you were depressed. Well, not all people but when people say they gained weight, that's why. Good luck with you're choice!

I've been on both. To know whether one is better than the other, it depends on your condition, the side effects of them both and I could go on and on. If I were you, I would ask the pharmacist, because he knows both medication well and how they fit you. The only thing I got against Paxil is that it has a side effect which can effect your sex drive. So I would check them out.

You do not need to worry about which is better.
After you talk to your doctor about the nature of your anxiety and depression, he/she will decide what medication would be best to try for someone with your particular symptoms.
