As previously mentioned, a gun in a properly trained household is the best bet to keep you and your family safe from intruders. I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun with a collapsable stock and short barrel. A shotgun firing shot (as opposed to slugs) is the firearm that is least likely to pass through walls and injure and unintended target on the other side of that wall. You will want the barrel and stock to be short so that you can maneuver in tight quarters.
If you insist on sticking with the bat, keep the intruder at a distance. Be proficient at swinging in an overhead chop or using the butt of the bat to jab; if you are in a hallway or doorway, you will be unable to utilize a conventional baseball swing.

As one poster said, it is better than nothing.
The problem with a bat is the fact it can be neutralized extremely easily. Think about baseball. The most velocity in the swing is at the end of the bat. If you hit the ball toward the end of the bat, the ball goes far and it is a good hit. If you hit an intruder with the end of the bat, it will be a devastating blow.
However, what happens if you step into a pitch and you hit the ball pretty close to your hands? The ball didn't go very far and it was generally a poor hit.
An intruder can do the same thing. Simply by stepping into you and/or the swing, the blow from the bat won't be that bad and all of a sudden, you are on the defensive with a weapon that requires distance to be effective.
If you train with a bat, it would work good (a bat can still be a decent close range weapon if you train with it). You might be better off carrying a knife as well.
Personally, I would opt for a 12 ga shotgun, but I respect your decision to have no guns in your house.

Get a used Winchester defender 1300 12 gauge for home protection. It is short, fast to reload, and will work a little better then a bat. A bat will maybe stop an intruder, but what if they have a bat, gun, or knife. I would rather have a gun to stop someone then try to beat the Sh!t out of them with a bat. Also you could get a nice Doberman or Pit Bull. That would deter me from robbing a house!

An Aluminum Baseball bat will work under most household conditions and circumstances and is better than nothing...Just not THE best choice....I also respect your choice not to have ANY firearms in your home. I can't explain why the answers here seem to all recommend a firearm in light of your personal feelings on the subject......
NOTE * I would tell you don't be pre-occupied with the possibilty of being sued later. If the need arises you need to worry about your own health and that of your family, FIRST and FOREMOST..Don't sweat the small stuff till after you've come thru safely...............

it depends, if you use it so save yourself or another person, then yes. BUT, your gonna get sued unless you can show that you were trained in the proper use of a bat for self defense. I know that sounds stupid, but it is the truth. As for safety reasons for not having a firearm in your house, It is safer to have that firearm in the house, have everyone trained either in it's safe and proper use, or in the case of young kids, trained not to touch it, but to report it to a parent. Further, lock it in a quick release lock box and only give the code to responsible adults in the home. By age five, my kids knew that they should never touch a firearm, that anytime they wanted to see or handle one, they could ask me, I would unload and render it safe and allow them to handle it under my supervision. This took the curiosity factor out of firearms for them. I used to place an unloaded firearm in plain view and hide where I could watch it. I can't tell you how proud I was when my 3 young children entered the room, spotted the firearm, and my oldest (then 8) took the two younger ones by the hand, walked to the opposite side of the room to pass as far from the weapon as possible, and brought them directly to my wife and reported the firearm.
Also, having someone break into your house and you picking up a baseball bat, and them pulling a firearm just doesn't sit well with my self defense guidelines.

A wood one is much better & will cause more trauma.* You might want to reconsider & purchase a 357 Magnum because you can also shoot 38 caliber ammo in it also. You get two handguns for the price of one.* Remember nothing less than a 357 Magnum Revolver with 4" barrel, new or used.* I prefer the Smith & Wesson & Colt Brands.* It is a proven man stopper.* I prefer the 357 Magnum rather than a ball bat for absolute security bar none.*

Similar items were used long before guns came into the picture, so it's better than nothing. Of course remember what happened to the guy that brought a knife to a gunfight...

Um, I would think so. My sister keeps a shovel and an aluminum bat by her front door at all times.

Generally you don't want to confront an intruder if you don't have to so make loud noises and say things like "I'm calling the police now!", or "I'm getting my gun!"
