Yes
It is said dogs age at a rate of 7 years to one human year and has been used as a guideline for years to try and figure out a dogs lifespan.
The Breed of the dog, how and where it lives, what it eats also have to be taken into consideration.

You are not going to stop asking questions, and whether you find an answer you can live with is something you can't tell right now. It is a shame that the questions about religion always boil down to whether we "believe in God". You don't have to believe in the God portrayed in the Bible. What if the question is put this way, "Is there some existence beyond what we see and feel and hear"? That is a question that has concerned many people over a long period of time. You can find some very interesting concepts about this in the category of Theosophy. It might be a life-long search for you.

It really depends on the breed. Large and giant breeds generally have a shorter life span than most small breeds. It's not uncommon for a chihuahua to live to be 20 years old (if that is 7 years for every one human year the dog would be the equivalent of a 140 year old person). The average life span of a Great Dane is only 8 years (going by the 7 year "rule", that's only equivalent to a 56 year old person). It's certainly not a rule of thumb I go by.

I think I heard that the first year of a dog's life is equivilant to 12 human years, and then it's 7 after that.

No.. it actually isn't true. It actual changes from year to year. Here's a good example of approximate dog aging compared to humans. There are also variable based on breeds and size of dog, etc.
1 year dog = 15 human
2 years dog = 25 human
4 years dog = 32 human
7 years dog = 45 human
10 years dog = 56 human
15 years dog = 76 human
20 years dog = 98 human
