Because people have strong beliefs to the contrary, and when someone says 'there is no God' it is like saying to that person 'everything you believe in is a lie' and that gets people upset.

I live in the US, where there is freedom of religion by law, but I do notice that not everyone is cool with the open expression of these ideas and beliefs. I am not necessarily an athiest. I don't believe in anything - I don't *know* if there is a God or not, I'm willing to listen to most ideas on the subject, but I don't really have a personal belief or take one side over the other (yet - I'm reading about Buddhism and am liking that so far).
From what I understand about most religions, they welcome and encourage chatter about other possibilities. Theological concepts and such. So there really isn't anything inherent in the religions that make people have issue with Athiests. I think people misinterpret it as a threat. Just a guess.

People are against Atheist for the following reasons
1) We do not conform to their way of thinking
2) We do not believe in the same god as they do
3) We do not think that religion is necessary for society.
4) We are freethinkers that is something that scares them.

In short there are many silly, foolish and ignorant reason why people are against us Atheists.

Well, what do atheists have against Christians? I'm not on here to bash the atheists, or tell them that because I'm Christian I'm better than them. I'm just on here to preach biblical truths. That's why sometimes I don't agree with this R&S section. It just causes all the religions to lash out at each other and kindle even more hatred.

I have nothing against them, nothing at all. My brother is an atheist we respectfully agree to disagree. However if someone is going to tell me i am wrong, i have lower intelligence, and that i dont use logic, well then I'm sorry but if you give it out you have to be prepared to take it. The gloves are off.

I don't think many people have much against atheists. Most people's thoughts concentrate on what's on the telly, how much money have I got and when are we going shopping.

God is important for a lot of people, so to have someone deny his existence can be perceived as offensive. And atheists are thought of as being without moral authority.
