I agree with my fellow nurse. Keep the wound clean and monitor it for signs of infection as you would do with any wound.

It's recommended that adolescents get a booster shot between the ages of 11 and 18, and that adults receive a routine tetanus booster shot every 10 years. If you received a deep or dirty wound and it has been more than five years since your last booster shot, you should get another booster shot. In your case...
I would clean it several times a day and bandage it well against dirt. Also: watch the wound closely for any signs of infection. If you suspect infection, consult your doctor right away.
.
With the "Superbug" (MRSA) infection going around...tetnus is not your only worry with this wound. Make sure you wash your hands well when changing the bandage to avoid getting this virus in your wound.

Call your doctor and ask. While Tetanus vaccinations are said to be good for ten years it is not uncommon to have a booster given if more than two years has passed. Better to be sure than think you are 100% protected. Cleaning a puncture wound is not very effective. As the nail pulled from the tissue in your foot the wound probably sealed. Tetanus is caused from Clostridium tetani spores being deposited in the wound. The toxin produced by the germinating spores causes Tetanus. So, be proactive in your health and make sure.

I'm going with the nurses on this one - a tetanus booster is good for ten years, unless there's an injury after five years. Three years is safe.

Just watch for signs of local infection - swelling, pain, or redness at the site, any oozing or pus from it. That requires a trip to the doctor.

clean it good with peroxide and bandage it with neosporin and it should heal nicely. If you have no physical problems such as diabetes you should do well. the tetnus should hold you a few more years.
