Thousands. Britain is the third most populated island in the world. That gives you some idea of the number. "Billions" is a huge exaggeration, as that means every person in Britain owns several hundred settlements!

Buy a road atlas and count the index, mine has 16 pages of index, 10 columns a page, not counting entries per column.
