NTSC 60GB is the best choice. It has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games (it has both chips from PS2), it has all the features (unlike 20GB and 40GB versions). 40GB isn't able of running PS2 games, has 2 USBs instead of 4, no built-in card reader. It can run only PS1 games. As for cooling and noise - my PS3 was running for more than 15 hours. PCs make more noise.

Technically, the 60 gb version costs Sony a lot more to make than the 40 gb version. The emotion engine, 2 extra USB ports, flash drives, and 20 extra gb costs more than 100 bucks, which is the difference between the two versions. But for most people, the 40 gb may seem like the better bargain because it's only 400 bucks, and you can play Blu-ray movies and PS3 games. It also includes Wi-Fi.

The 60 GB has stop being produced, but if you can find one it is the better purchase. It only costs a bit more and has a lot more features.

I have heard rumors that the 40gb isn't fully backward compatible with all the PS2 games. If you still have a lot of PS2 games that you play; this is something to consider.
