I am mormon and I dont drink because we are commanded not to drink. Most things are suppose to be in moderation, but there are some substances we feel are so harmful to ones body and soul that its better just to stay away from completely. Although a little bit of alcohol may not harm, alcoholism and moderation in partaking of alcohol is a major problem and we feel its better to just stay away from it altogher. Tobacco is another that is completely forbidden and coffee and harder illegal drugs. Prescriptions and over the counter drugs are fine if they are for a medical purpose and shouldnt be abused. Red meat should be eaten sparingly and caffeine is more of a grey area where it is highly recommended you stay away from but not forbidden.

Alcohol, consumed in small quantities, is neither harmful or addictive. In fact, some doctors advocate drinking small amounts of red wine for its health benefits, especially for the heart. Consumption of small quantities of alcohol is a matter of Christian freedom. Drunkenness and addiction are sin. However, due to the Biblical concerns regarding alcohol and its effects, due to the easy temptation to over-consumption of alcohol, and due to the possibility of causing offense and/or stumbling of others – it is usually best for a Christian to abstain entirely from drinking alcohol.

The Bible does not say that it is a sin to drink, even though many Christians act as if it does. What the Bible does say is to warn of the power that strong drink might have over someones life. If the Bible warns about an issue, I am at least going to listen and see what it is talking about. I decided a while back not to drink, not because it was a sin, but because I did not want to be a stumbling block to others. I work with a lot of teens in my camping ministry and feel that not drinking sets a better example for them. I have seen too many folks have their lives destroyed because they could not handle drinking alcohol. Just is not worth it to me.

There is nothing Biblical about not drinking alcohol. It is a personal choice. Drunkenness is what is spoken against. There are, however, many that will say that it is a sin to have alcohol when it clearly is not. Jesus turned water into wine. Wine was wine then just as it is now.

That is a personal choice. Some Christians just don't want to drink alcohol.

St Paul condemns drunkenness, but the Bible does not condemn the act of drinking (the first miracle at the wedding and the last supper are could indicators). Followers of the Law - which Paul says does not apply to Christians - do not drink. None-the-less, many Christian groups insist of following parts of the law because it makes them feel better about themselves and helps in oppressing their membership.
For what its worth, one of the Five Precepts for lay Buddhists is to not drink. The difference is that these are suggestions for assisting your advancement on the spiritual path and not considered sinful.

It doesnt say int he bible " Dont drink! Its a sin!" But as a christian myself, i know that some christian chose not to drink so as not to damage there witness. To a non-believer, if you a preaching the word to them, and then they see you out in public in a bar, it could ruin your testimony. Not bc having a drink is wrong (althought the bible DOES say that drunkeness is a sin) but because of what it might look like or how it might be interpreted by the non believer :)

There is some verse in the bible that says to treat your body as the temple of God. Does that help? I'm sure that some Christians don't drink becuase they honestly dont' want to, and other's don't drink because of their religion.

Yes, the bible does tell us not to be drunk is several places.
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; (Eph 5:18 )
They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man. (Job 12:25 -)
When you think about the lifestyle and behavior of someone who drinks you can see that it is not what we are to strive to be as believers.
It's not a "sin" per-se...it's just kind of a waste of time.

To be clear, the Bible is not against alcohol. Jesus drank alcohol and of course, His first miracle given in the NT was the changing of water to wine.
Getting drunk - that's a sin.
However, I personally feel some conviction from God to not drink. I've seen the damaging affects of alcohol within my family and others, and chose to never drink. I feel that I'm called to do this and that I'm doing it for Him.
