The Orthodox Church governs her life by Holy Tradition. Many, however, are confused as to what exactly Holy Tradition is. The word "tradition" comes from the Latin taditio, which is a translation of ta Greek word used frequently in the Scriptures, paradosis. Translated literally, this word means something that is handed on from one person to another, in the same way that a baton is handed over in a relay race. Something that is "traditioned" is passed on from one person or group of people to another. St. Paul clarifies in Galations 1:11 that the Tradition of the Church is "not according to man." In other words, it is revealed by God. It is not a human product. Tradition means an experience, an entire life - not simply a series of teaching, but the living out of those teachings that have come from God who has revealed Himself to us. Tradition is the living out of the revelation of God by His people.

What is important to realize for Protestants, is the Church of the New Testament existed for more than 300 years before the books of the New Testament were put into their final form. The Bible is part of Holy Tradition, when it is made into the foundation things do not work, that is why we have so many Protestant "churches".

On a lighter note... are you ready for the new Orthodox Study Bible coming in Feb? It seems like we have been hearing it is going to come out for a very long time, and now it finally is!

The Bible has stifled the free flow of spirit through Christianity. Tradition in the orthodox church is set from ancient times and not updated for the living in the modern world.
