It depends...now don't you hate that answer.

If the TV comes with a built in receiver then you don't need another one. If it is just a monitor (no receiver) then you need some way to get an HD signal to display. There are several options here.

1) You only watch DVD's, possibly bluray or HD-DVD which will give you the HD content.

2) You have cable or satellite and choose the HD option in which case those are HD receivers.

3) You don't want to pay for HD and purchase an HD receiver like any of the ones found on Amazon by companies like Humax, Samsung, and ViewSonic to name a few.

That is all you really need to know.

If you TV has a built-in HD tuner and only want major networks or local channels, you may only need a HD antenna that you can purchase for about $75 from Newegg.com or Frys.com.

If you want DirecTV, Dish Network or Cable you'll need the HD Receiver they supply to you to receive all their HD programming.

If you just want to watch movies in HD, you can just go out an buy a BluRay player (or PS3) or an HD-DVD player (or X-Box with HD player) and hook it up via HDMI.

Hope this helps

If the TV has a tuner (not "HD Ready"), try this:

Go to Antennaweb.ORG and type in your address. It will show you the HD stations around your house.

If you are lucky enough to be able to use an indoor antenna, get the Philips Silver Sensor for about $30.

If you are too far away - you need to contact your CATV company or Dish or DirectTV for HD service.
