Cook a pretty cheap cut of meat in a slow cooker or braise it on a really low heat. Then you take two forks and pull the meat across.

With beef, you want to braise for a long time like a pot roast.

Cuts to use, chuck roast, 7-bone roast, pot roast (as some stores call it), brisket. Look for the word chuck and round... or shop by price where you look for the least expensive cut.

My preference would be to use chuck... it has the most flavor.
Brisket is okay, but seems to dry out a lot faster if it sits out.
Round is just more expensive, but still good.

If you're needing to make a lot for a party, you can go to places like Smart and Final or Cash and Carry and buy a shoulder clod. The last I looked it was about $1.47 per pound. It's a big hunk of meat probably 8 to 10 pounds.

Cooking method... cook low and slow... low temperatures for a long time in a flavorful liquid (3 to 4 hours up to 6 hours.)

Place the steak a stockpot and cover with beef broth cover the pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low, uncover, and simmer until the meat pulls apart easily with a fork.
Remove the beef from the broth with a slotted spoon and place on a platter. Allow to cool, then pull beef into smaller pieces.

here is a great recipe for carnitas
