Lack of contrast.... Maybe an image could appear in the crumb pattern on a light colored dish but the cake is too uniformly dark for any contrasting image to appear...

I don't think I have ever seen a slice of devil's food cake last long enough to discern any image from it.

Devil's food cake is dark and brown, and in some cases, covered with black icing.
