Forget the shotgun, it'll just get you killed. You need a proper dangerous game rifle. Forget the Barrett .50 BMG. It is too heavy and cumbersome to shoot at charging dangerous game and the one who says you got ten shots has never tried a follow-up shot with one. Good luck with the .700 Nitro Express. If it is a double rifle you 'might' get a follow-up shot before the Rhino runs you down, so you have to make that first shot count.
The .375 Holland & Holland is considered the minimum dangerous game rifle in Africa. The T-Rex recoils nearly as bad as the .700 NE so your practical choices are: The .375 H & H or one of the smaller Nitro Express like the .470 NE or the .500 NE.
I would probably trust my life to the .470 Nitro Express in a double-rifle, or the .458 Win. Mag. since I just happen to already own one. If I was feeling brave, or foolish I use the .375 H & H trusting I could make my first shot count. Seriously, this is a good choice just remember you're shooting the minimum caliber.
Good luck.

I am thinking either a nice SxS double rifle in 600 NE but I would settle for anything above 35 caliber.
Good Calibers would be 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, 416 Weatherby, 416 Rem. Mag, 416 Win Express, 416 Taylor, 458 Lott, 458 Win Mag, 460 Weatherby, 470 Nitro, 577 Nitro, 600 Nitro or evven 700 Nitro

Rhino are protected almost everywhere, but if you win a lottery, get a tag, and then get into that situation, you want a side-by-side, and something like 450/400 is not enough for a stop. On the other hand, 600 N.E. may be too unwieldy, since nobody practices with these monsters. I'd vote for the old 450 or the more popular 470. As an aside, folks, the word is that 700 doesn't penetrate as reliably as 600, though I have to admit I haven't had the opportunity to test the difference.

If it has got to the point of charging you then your chances aren't great unless there's either a large tree or termite mound (next best thing to concrete) right next to you.
Final alternatives are a good heavy caliber double rifle with quality solid shot and nerves of steel!
A 45-70 or 30-06 does not have the penetration to guarantee to punch through a rhino and bring it down at short range. Sometimes it really is about something more than shot placement, sometimes you really do need to be holding one of the most powerful game rifles in the world.
460 Weatherby is probably as low as you'd want to go.
If you miss, I hope you don't forget to dodge.

Don't you just love these theoretical questions. How many time do we have to answer them? Why not make it a Kodiac bear, because there are enough of them around to actually make it legal to shoot one. My suggestion is to go to the library and get some books about the great white hunters of yesterday and read them. In those books will be real people that found themselves in that situation centuries ago and they will write what they did and how it stopped the animal.
All of us are just guessing. They actually did it.

I would want something in .458 Mag level or even more powerful. Even then I would not want to be there unless I had fired the rifle on a range enough to be comfortable with it.

Probably something in a large bore Holland & Holland double rifle. .375, .458 Lott, 45-120, 600 or 700 nitro express. That pretty much covers it, you gonna buy the ammo right?

A RINO means "Republican In Name Only", kinda like John McCain.
For a charging Rhinoceros, I'd want my carrier to hand me a .600 Nitro Express double rifle.

John McCain isn't that big. All you'd have to do is threaten to withhold medical treatment and he'll turn belly up and squeal.

I have to agree with the user who said a large bore double rifle. Mine doesn't have to be a Holland and holland, but it sure would be nice to actually fire one of those exquisite rifles one day.
