Fruits develop from the ovary of the flower and have usually seeds. I also want to correct the "vegetables are roots" statement someone made. Vegetables are foods taken from any vegetative part of a plant. The word 'vegetative' refers to normal non-reproductive parts of a plant. These can be shoots or stems (asparagus), leaves (lettuce, spinach), leaf stalks (celery, rhubarb).

Actually, pumpkin is neither a fruit nor a vegetable. We use pumpkins as decors during halloween. The right term for this is, squash. It is classified as either a fruit or a vegetable.

Because it has seeds and develops the part of the flower containing the ovules.

There are a lot of things that we consider to be "vegetables" that are actually fruit--squash, tomatoes and so on. Anything with a seed in it is actually (botanically speaking) a fruit.
