Vista Lite is NOT a version put out by microsoft...so it is (as you said) a pirated copy which has been renamed.

There are 8 Microsoft Vista Products:
1 Windows Starter 2007 (stunted version of Vista)
2 Vista Home Basic Ed.
3 Vista Home N
4 Vista Home Premium Ed.
5 Vista Business Ed
6 Vista Business N
7 Vista Enterprise Ed
8 Vista Ultimate

So---bottom line....back up everything, and start fresh....your "upgrade" will not work...cause you did not register a legal copy to begin with.

sorry... :(

You have several options.
1. Create a disk image of your current installation. Get a cheap external drive, and image your current. Norton Ghost is popular. I like dd myself, because it's free, but it requires using Linux. Download Knoppix if you're interested. I'll leave you to explore all the potential exploitation possible with this method.

2. Use qtparted on knoppix to resize your existing Windows partition, and do a clean install on a separate partition.

3. Back up your data and cross your fingers.

4. Don't use pirated software. Why do you need Vista anyway? I only use Windows for games. Why don't use bittorrent to obtain open license software, like you're supposed to?

"Vista Lite" is a hacked version of the genuine Vista. I suggest obtaining a genuine version and follow its installation instructions. Or stay with your current Windows.

Anyway, if you upgrade to Vista you may have to reinstall your apps because they may not be Vista compatible. Visit each software vendors website to obtain Vista compatible version of the applications, if available.

if you back up your computer by start > programs > accessories > system tools > system backup and configuration.

then stick it on a remote place like cd, server or network computer.

you can install vista and then just retreive it after.
