Actually you almost have it here, I'll tell you why:

God is like a father to us, and as a good father he must set rules and limitations while still loving us and trying to make our lives wonderful.

As someone who set limitations, he must punish us, but he is loving so he is saving us from the punishment he has to give us. He paid our price for us, like if your father pays your speeding ticket (only somewhat like this).

So, for the unsaved, it is like, ohhh your gonna be in trouble...
but for the saved, we can rest easy in the fact that he has already paid our price, we are no longer enslaved by sin, but we are free in him.

No sh!t sherlock. Poppa loves all his chilluns, nevertheless he has plans to treat a select minority of them to ice cream, while the rest are taken out behind the barn and beaten mercilessly for all eternity.
