And that over 4/5 of the population is Christian?

The U.S. was founded by Deists who wanted freedom of and from religion, because they already lived in a Christian country (UK) where those beliefs were shoved down their throats and they could be killed at any given time if the monarchy wished. That means they were not Christian, nor was the country founded on such principals. Why create history that never existed?

Also, just because someone says they are a Christian doesn't make it so.

It's believed that folks like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and the other founding fathers were Christian but there are many letters and documents from them that say they weren't, yet people insist they were regardless.

The fact that the major documents that run this country frequently state the Christianity of which the founders of the US were is a key point. 4/5 of the population of the US is probably not Christian. Polls that people click on, I would think. A lot of people say they are Christian just for the fact that "there is a god somewhere" in their eyes so automatically they think they must be Christian. The US was founded on freedom of religion, but the founders were Christians. Therefore, you cannot make everyone Christian just because the founders were. I don't think those who bring up this fact are trying to recruit people in saying so, they are just pointing out the obvious and saying "these people wanted freedom of religion like you and they still allowed prayers and schools" and such.

The Pilgrims/Puritans were Christian and most people consider them to be the founders of America since they were the first immigrants to colonize the “New World”.

They believed in God and Jesus and followed an incredibly strict version of the Bible, the Geneva version. In retaliation, King James had a less rigid version of the Bible printed just for the Church of England, hence the King James version of the Bible many churches use today.

Just because they left a Christian society in England doesn't make them any less Christian themselves. The Puritans in fact were extremely strict and faithful Christians who based their lives for the most on the tenents set out in the Geneva version of the Bible. As one of the previous answers mentioned, they weren't running from a religion, they were simply seeking a country and a home where they would be free to practice their faith without persecution.

The Deists who founded the USA had been under a State run church. The official religion of England changed with each leader. And if the King was to convert, all of England was required to convert also.

Our forefathers did not want freedom FROM religion, merely to be able to choose their own practice of it without pressure from the government.

An end to government interference in religion was the goal that was sought by the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. The Deists that wrote that noble treatise held scripture in high regard, regardless of their personal practices through organized religion.
Read your history books.

It is true that that Christianity was the majority religion of the first european colonists, it was the majority religion at the time of the country's founding and has remained by far the dominant religion through the history of our country. There is no doubt that the country was settled by Christians and has been populated by a Christian majority.

The Settlers have been attempting to get far off from the Church of britain. The church became like a central authority, and the church isn't. faith would desire to come from a organic technique and can't be compelled upon somebody. The settlers wanted to worship God how they wanted, no longer via ritualistic acts

I think people just confuse the colonization of America with the formation of the nation of the U.S.A.

I don't ever remember learning that the revolution was fought because of religious persecution, I thought it was more political than religious. But I am no historian.

The Puritans were the first to really settle here. They came here because the King was too loose with his moral values.

Maybe because it was, try reading some of the founding fathers written works and your ignorance should be cleared up. and maybe a history book would teach you a little history. That would help.
