My almost 5yr old(boy) is mostly home this year, will start K in Aug 2008. He was in preschool 4 hrs a day, M-F, I changed that to twice a week, 3 hrs. So now, we have tons of time, just him and me.

We already do or have these:
Lincoln logs, Tinker Toys, SuperMind puzzles, crayons/markers/art supplies, puppets, some PBS TV shows, read books(he can read at 1st grade lvl), some fun math (addition..games), soccer, walk and play in different neighborhood parks, library, some children's discovery museum visits, some computer time (starfall.com )
No video games.
Looking for suggestions. What toy, activity, game does your 5 or 6 yr old boy(or girl!) enjoy?

***Any particular toy or game you bought and it was a big hit?
*** Any board game you would recommend?
***Or, just any suggestions on what else to do together? we already read, do art, talk, go for walks, puzzles.

My 6-year-old is obsessed with solving and drawing mazes. He also loves making marble tracks, either from those plastic sets you can buy for kids to construct, or just out of ramps and things he makes from our wooden blocks. Making forts out of pillows, blankets, large boxes, etc. is another big activity. Board games that have been really popular since age 5 are Mexican Train Dominos (which they ask to play constantly), card games, battleship, mastermind, and chess (we bought a computer game ... learn to play chess with fritz and chester, that teaches it one small step at a time). Anything outdoors is a big hit ... soccer, tree climbing, bike riding, ice skating, sledding, skiing, bug catching, frog catching, playground, etc.). I made a track on itunes of songs my kids really like and they spend lots of time playing it and dancing around (at 5, try the cheesy wedding reception music that kids adore, like YMCA or the Chicken Dance). You could also try a class like gymnastics or karate or something. Some 5-year-olds are ready for piano, we've found fun group lessons that my son adored at 5.

My grand-daughter is the same. Even outgrown DORA! She luvs her ater school club, goes to rainbows, starting gymnastics, luvs to make stuff and learn school work and luvs her new nintendo which she has to look after puppies properly. She luvs to bake with mum and anything to do with coloured paper, shapes, letters not too much glitter though. Its endless what they want to do, and can do nowadays. Good luck and enjoy cause its priceless watchin them learn.
