According to all the sources I've read, "atheist" allows for the formation of a "regular plural," by the simple addition of the letter "s" at the end.

Why is this such a challenging task?

They have enough problems with spelling the singular form of it. Let's not muck it up for them.

I don't know. Apparently, it's also hard to remember in what order to place the "e" and the "i" in the word "atheist." Either that, or there is such a thing as an "athiest," and I'm the ignorant one...but I don't see it in the dictionary.

Welcome back. Unless you work with the written word everyday, people tend to forget how grammar works. And after working with children, I realize that at least in English, grammar and writing down our thoughts is much more difficult to learn then I ever imagined.

Seems to be beyond the capacity of many Christian types to spell "atheists" correctly. Of course, most of them have difficulty with "Christian," too, so at least they don't discriminate ;-)

Just say "atheists". It's no more challenging than saying "purists" or "fundamentalists". Consider it a workout for the tongue.
