I think it was the General Service Medal - Green Ribbon with Purple Stripe and Cyprus Bar.

It WAS the general service medal with 3 stripes - 2 purple on the outside and green in the middle (all of equal width).
I knew a few guys who had it as I was in the RAF Regiment in the late 60's.
The later GSM was the same colour but with a wider green stripe.
