You do realise Australia is a massive continent?
There are a million places to visit and travelling can take a lot of valuable time and energy, for example flying from Sydney to Perth is like going from New York to L.A.
Make sure you have some idea of the main areas you want to see before you leave your country otherwise your valuable time will be spent figuring out where you want to be, and that can be frustrating. The most popular places for international tourists seem to be the Reef , Sydney , Alice Springs (Ayers Rock) or Uluru, the Gold Coast , there are many other small towns and regions in between that are very interesting too. Each state in Australia has its own little attraction or draw card, and of course variation in climate. Ask your travel expert before you leave and see some of the hidden away places that not so many international visitors go to.
Check out Tasmania, there is some beautiful scenery and bush walks and summer is a lovely time to be there. There is a beach in Tasmania called wineglass bay, it was voted one of the best beaches in the world I think number three at one stage, it is something else, trust me. Or have a look at Broome in the far NW of western Australia, it is a long way from anywhere but worth the trip, spend a few days there, great holiday area and very remote. You can ride camels on the beach, a bit further south at Monkey Mia you can feed Dolphins in the wild, they come right up to you as you wade in the water. Like I said, the list goes on, have a great time.

Don't do the tourist thing hang out in Sydney during the Sydney festival you'll have a really great time and wont want to leave OZ, "The Police" are performing at Telstra Stadium in January 08 as it is summer here the beaches are all fifteen to twenty minutes from the city and there are many live out door event during the festival of Sydney with concerts outdoor cinemas festivals and the bars and clubs here are all open 24/7and the Australia Day harbour ferry races and fireworks on the harbour bridge. The public transport system can take you anywhere around the city you want to go. A day at the Blue Mountains and see the three Sisters, or catch a ferry to go to Taronga Zoo, or a drive down the south coast and see wild Kangaroos swimming in the surf at Pebble Beach, or catch a train to Newcastle for the day or go out to the wineries on the north coast. The Big Day Out and Home bake concerts at the Domain. Film Festivals, Opera and Jazz in the Park, I love Sydney in January. People freak when they come here to OZ and don't ever want to leave there is so many things to do everyday. There are the Community fairs on I love going to the Kings Cross , Glebe, Redfern and New Town street fairs and see the bands and they are all free events or just take a few bottles of wine and a picnic to listen to the Jazz in the park or spend the day at the beach or have dinner at Darling harbour on a warm night. There are day tours where you can go sailing and have lunch on a harbour beach or floating disco cruises. Paddle Steamers with live join in shows where you can dress up and be part of the show. A day trip to Canberra to Parliament house or to the film and sound archives. Just drop into a local pub have a game of pool and meet the locals who will tell you all the places to go to. Everyone here is totally extremely friendly and you will probably make a lot of new "mates" (friends) while your here. I love living here.

First of all January is right in the middle of the Australian summer. The deserts will be hot and anything north of Brisbane will be hot and wet. If you can handle the heat, places like Kakadu National Park, and other places in the north can be sensational in the "Wet".
PLACES:
Ayers Rock (Uluru)
Kakadu National Park
Great Barrier Reef
Whitsuday Islands
Fraser Island
Gold Coast
NSW Coast
Sydney
