So I'm planning to go to Times Square for New Years for 3 days and I decided the best way to avoid so much trouble I should just stay in a hotel in Newark, NJ or somewhere around there because it's cheaper. So my question is, how will I get Times Square? Train? Cab? Bus? I dont know!! What trains do I take? How much do they cost?

Btw, I'm from Delaware so Newark is only like 2 hrs away.

I plan on going to a Travel Agency if I don't work everything out on my own but I thought I'd get some humble advice from the Yahoo community!

Thanks in advance!

Wait, so is Newark really dangerous or something? Should I not stay there?

Catch the Path train (cost $1.50) from Newark Penn Station to 33rd street and walk about 4-5 blocks down. It's the fastest way there from newark.

Yeah, I wouldnt stay in Newark, but if you do, take NJ transit train from Newark Penn to NY Penn station and you'll be there in 20 min, and you'll be walking distance from times square. Also, if you plan on actually being in times square for the ball drop, you need to get in the area around noon, have something to eat and stick around. The police will close off the area at 5pm or so, and make sure to use the bathroom early, because there are none provided there.

Newark is very close to NY, only like 20mins on the train to Penn Station, there you take L train to time square.

Newark is a very dangerous place, I 'll not stay in a hotel in Newark. Couple Friends of mine got robbed there.

If you want a cheap hotel just blocks from Times Sq., check out the Elk Hotel located at the corner of W42nd St. and 9th Ave. (360W42). $60 per night, and if you're lucky you may get a room with a bathroom, otherwise you'll have to use a shared one on your floor.

It's old and dingey, but for the price it can't be beat. I've stayed there (short stays lol) and I can attest that it's a fine place to stay. Just not the prettiest.
