The flag previous to your current flag had the tiger as its emblem.
According to Wikipeida: "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Flag
This was the AzahHindFlag: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AzadHindFlag.png
"Arzi Hukumat-e-Azad Hind (Urdu: عارضی حکومتِ آزاد ہند, Hindi: आर्ज़ी हुक़ूमत-ए-आज़ाद हिन्द, the Provisional Government of Free India) ( sometimes Azad Hind) was a political movement originating in the 1940s outside of India with a purpose of freeing India from British Rule."

The Govt., of India adopted the triple lion atop the Ashoka Stupa as its symbol for a peace loving nation. Each country chooses suitable entities as national flower, bird, and animal based on the cultural ethos. The royal Bengal tiger is special to India and is an endangered species.
Lord Shiva is depicted as draped in a tiger skin.
It is the vahan of Ayyappa and various Devi forms, and has a hoary religious tradition.

Lion shows that we are supreme power but the combination of grace, strength, power has earned the tiger great respect and high esteem as well as earned all this for India. So the tiger and lion represents two different things which is our supremity, combination of grace, strength, power which have earned us great respect and high esteem. We are lions as we are supreme and we are tigers because of the things mentioned above.
Cheers!!!

Tiger is an animal of a special nature. It doesn't do anything to a person who passes by it, if it has on hunger. But lions, in the other hand, kill them.Tigers only attack us if we disturb its kits. Thus mother India does nothing to harm other nations, unless and until it causes harm to any of her children.Bharata mata ki JAY!!!!!!
