I do not attend church anymore, but have nothing against it. I am an atheist who hopes there is a God, who can heal everyone's wounds and satisfy our curiosity about the world in an afterlife (after He lovingly forgives atheists' honestly mistaken disbelief). I enjoyed religious ritual immensely when I was young and was even an altar boy.
To this day, Jesus and Socrates are the two most outstanding people who ever lived. In reality, their adoring biographers air-brushed their portraits, much as authors somewhat idealize their heroes.
As a scientist, I follow Ockham's razor in all deliberations. "The God Hypothesis" is a massive violation of Ockham and is untenable intellectually compared to the much simpler "nihilistic conjecture," that the world is a "zero sum state" of energy (that is, total positive energy = total negative energy) that evolved by unknown mechanisms from the simplest zero sum state of nothingess. Yet, here's hoping Ockham razor is wrong in this case!

Atheism in the technicalk sense is an intellectual assertion that they can prove or know that God does not exist. Most people who claim to be atheists are not really atheists but called agnostics. They may believe with all their hearts that there is not God, but they have not been able to prove it with logical argumentation or other evidences. Actually, there is no such thing as a person who can prove a universal negative like "there is not God" because universal negatives are impossible to prove. In order to know that there is no God you would have to prove that in all the Universe, in everything that exists there is not one place where 1 piece of evidence exists that shows God exists. Well, no one can know that. The only person who COULD prove a universal negative is, ironically, God.
I know I will anger some atheists by saying that they cannot prove their faith in nothingness, but it is true, even if they retort by saying I cannot prove He DOES exist. Well, there is evidence that He does exist, but not evidence that they deem credible. The reason they do not deem it credible is because it suggests that there is a God and they do not want to consider that because they KNOW that there is no evidence in all the universe that says there is something more to reality than what the senses experience. Anyway, that is atheism at the core. It is a belief.
Why do they go to church? Atheists are not necessarily people who do not follow some moral code of some kind. I had a very good friend who was an atheist and there were not man nicer people that I have known. He went to church to please his wife but also because while he did not agree with the idea of God, he at least saw value in teaching moral guidelines to others. Some go so they can find more things to poke fun at.

Many atheists don't go to church, the only time I go is when the family goes for some reason.
Basically atheism is not believing in any gods. We see no evidence or reason to show that they are real.

I went to church a couple years ago to observe the whole church-going experience. I already knew what it was like because I grew up in the church, but I had stopped going after becoming an adult and realizing it (Christianity) was all hokey. I wanted to observe it as an adult with a rational mind. It was quite interesting, sad but enteraining on some level.

I had to go when I was in the military. Why did I go? 1 hour of sitting in church was better than 8 hours of hard work.

Atheism = Does Not Believe in God.
The only reason most atheists attend Church/Temple is because their spouse or their parents drag force them to.

Atheism is broken down into two parts: strong and weak.
Weak: lack of belief in a god
Strong: active belief in no god
Some go for their spouses, some go for kicks, others (the majority) don't go
