As Left Bank Hook stated you don't necessarily have to have an HD TV. But in order to take advantage of the higher resolution you would need an HD TV. The players are still quite expensive and if I recall only 2 manufacturers are making players which will handle both Blue Ray and HDDVD. LG and Samsung. You can expect to pay 1000 bucks for either of these players. And as of now I don't think you can even get an HDDVD or Blue Ray under 300 or 400 bucks. I might be wrong there I havent priced them in a while. About 3 months ago I know the Play Station 3 was the cheapest blue ray player and you can play games on it. I would wait and see if one format sticks or not. Remember the sony MiniDisk? Nice idea but it didn't take off. You don't want to buy one type and then in a year find out that type is not supported.

Well if your tv is big enough and sharp enough for you to notice compression artifacts like pixelation when watching normal dvd's you might notice a very small improvement with HD DVD or Blu-Ray. It won't be anywhere as good as if you had an HDTV though as a standard tv can only display 480 interlaced lines (2 fields of 240 lines shown one after the other) while HDTV can do 1080 progressive lines (1 field of lines showing all 1080 at once instead of alternating half the lines at a time).

Well, either player will PLAY on a standard TV. However, neither HD-DVD or BluRay will look any better than a standard DVD player. (In fact, the standard DVD player is higher definition than your TV.)

Now, it's my understanding that they might have more extras & stuff on the high-def DVDs. And if you watch that stuff, it might be worth buying one. Or if you think you're going to get a HD TV in the next couple years, it might be good to invest in the player now.

Otherwise, just go with the standard DVD player for now. Disks cost less, and there won't be improved picture.

Simple and sweet answer.

No, you don't need an HD TV if the player has a compatible connector for your current TV. However, it may not be in your best financial interest unless you are thinking of upgrading your TV in the next year also.

the player should play on a standard set-however if it's HD imagery you desire then a set capable of reproducing HD material would be required.
