It is a means of communication. It is a language. But it is very different from what we call "human languages". Not because of music is not human-made, but because languages such as English, Spanish or Russian are of a different nature.
In that sense, music DOES NOT belong to that set.

Yes.
If you mean "language" to be a form of expressing oneself, then yes. Music is used by many people to express themselves. Amadeus Mozart was deaf, so he couldn't communicate except through music. We can see that it certainly conveyed a message, as he is remembered as one of the greatest musicians of all times.
By definition, it's also a language. "A language is a system of symbols and the rules used to manipulate them...Languages are not just sets of symbols. They also contain a grammar, or system of rules, used to manipulate the symbols."
As music has symbols, such as treble clef, bass clef, the wide array of notes, rests, and more, and it has rules, as in you can't put 5 beats in a measure while the time signature is 4/4, it has SYMBOLS and RULES. Music has a history from the B.C.'s. It has progressed with instruments, styles, and the way it is written from then. It also uses grammar, including chord progressions, styles, etc.
But, by its own definition, music is a "form of art".
You decide... is it a language or not?

So they say. I'm taking some piano classes, and that's what I see in the music book. Because you can express your feelings with music without saying a word.

i think it is depending on the music you like. it's like being in your own world certain songs come on and you can relate to them, or if you're getting a little older songs you grew up with that still are good to you. the true test of music you like is will it still be there when your older like 35 or45 years + after h s and beyond still playing the same songs you like???
