Is it to wake up the Lord? But the Lord never sleeps. Is it to let the Lord know we have come? He does not need to be told, as He is all knowing. Is it a form of seeking permission to enter His precinct? It is a homecoming and therefore entry needs no permission. The Lord welcomes us at all times. Then why do we ring the bell?
The ringing of the bell produces what is regarded as an auspicious sound. It produces the sound Om, the universal name of the Lord. There should be auspiciousness within and without, to gain the vision of the Lord who is all-auspiciousness.
Even while doing the ritualistic aarati, we ring the bell. It is sometimes accompanied by the auspicious sounds of the conch and other musical instruments. An added significance of ringing the bell, conch and other instruments is that they help drowned any inauspicious or irrelevant noises and comments that might disturb or distract the worshippers in their devotional ardour, concentration and inner peace.
As we start the daily ritualistic worship (pooja) we ring the bell, chanting:
Aagamaarthamtu devaanaam
gamanaarthamtu rakshasaam
Kurve ghantaaravam tatra
devataahvaahna lakshanam
I ring this bell indicating the invocation of divinity, So that virtuous and noble forces enter (my home and heart); and the demonic and evil forces from within and without, depart.

Gentleman_Smiling I do not believe that it is the sound of the Church bell that is as significant as the fact that it signifies time. Before everyone had watche, clocks and other timepieces the populance had to rely on other means of keeping track of time so as not to be late for public and/or social events. There was once a period in history when a "Town Crier" would every so often as designated, usually on the hour would walk threw a town ringing a bell and giving the news.In addition a bell is sounded as a means for the townspeople to gather up at a designated spot.It could be the Town Hall or the Town Church.I don't know who invented the first timepieces, but it must have come after the time of Copernicus and Galileo. Also Brahe and Kepler. We base time on bodies in motion such as the earth. As you know the planets have three motins , one Elliptical. Our Universe has been termed a "Clockwork Universe".All of the bodies in this Universe revolving without colliding into a catastrophe of gigantic proportions. So timepieces then haven't been in existence for that many years relative to all history. So because of this exactness was at best only as good as a uniform sound or word of mouth. My best guess is that it is vestigal and has been carried on for posterity. Up above I see I spelled watches incorrectly.Your Pal larry m

Indian temples of the past era were erected in a very specific design and they conformed to Vaastu Shashtra. The entrance used to be small and there were no windows The gross effect of such construction was reverberation of sound inside the temple several times. There were large numbers of bells hung inside the temple and worshippers visiting the shrine used to toll them. Every body was not aware the rationale behind the tolling bells. So they assumed that it was done to please the Deity, or to inform the deity that he too has arrived in His service. And the tradition has continued since many centuries.I personally believe that reverberating sound waves, echoing repeatedly had curative powers in them and our wise ancestors were aware of it. Hence, they established the tradition of installing bells in the temples and encouraged those visiting the temple to toll them.

Of course it is a call to worship but it also has other purposes.
1. alarm (fire, bandits, and such)
2. time (noon, sunset) My hometown had a whistle that blew at noon and 6:00.
3. celebration (weddings, holidays,etc.)
The church was more than just a place to pray. It was a central building that a whole village would be built around.
How, when, and why they were rung carried a special message.

The toll of the bell from a temple or church is a meaningless ringing but call from a muslim mosque is very meaningfull announcing the invitation from Almighty God to come and get His bounties and blessing.

1) to call the community together.
2)to ward off evil spirit during the time of worship
3) to welcome the holy spirit
4) used during mass to show the presence and work of holy spirit.
