I will be in Southern LA for the next two weeks. Does anyone know where I can go and look for gemstones or fossils?

If you go to amazon.com there are a number of books and map books with locations detailed in them. There's also a number of hobbyist websites that can be found using a Yahoo search on "Gem hunting soutthern California". Here's one I found

I don't think that this is the type of hunting that this category means, but you got my attention anyway. I know that Arkansas has a diamond mine and you can go there and keep any diamonds you can find, but I have never heard about gem stones in California. Gold maybe but not gemstones. Unless it is turquoise out in the desert, which might be a good thing to check out. When I was a young man and was in California with the Army I spent a lot of off duty time at the beach. But gem stones was the furthest thing from my mind. But some sea shells are collectors pieces because of their scarcity, something else to consider.
Well good luck to you and enjoy your vacation.

Not familiar with Socal...see if anything on the link helps. Best state for overall gem hunting might be Idaho, or maybe Montana [ sapphires ].
