Impossible to say, like asking who is the best driver. I like Bob Hoover and Chuck Yaeger, they have good attitudes. But I like Brian Trubshaw and John Cunningham too. Alex Henshaw was one of the very best too, anyone with the balls to barrel roll a Lancaster on a chop flight... for barrel rolling Lancasters(!) has got real balls. He test flew many Spitfires and Lancasters, one Spit even broke up in flight and he didn't even bother to tell his wife when he got home.
Yaeger has the coolest stories though. After ejecting from an F104 he caught the seat in his helmet and rocket motor slag burned his face. On landing a guy in a pickup truck stopped to give him a lift, on seeing the mess his head was in the guy passed out. So Yaeger picked up the driver and stuck him in the back of the truck then got in and drove himself back to base.
Hoover is a superb pilot, but how are you supposed to choose between those two?

Neil Armstrong was a pretty good pilot. Read his book First Moon, and you will hate Chuck Yeager, and Buzz Aldrin.

If you don't have the confidence that borders on ********* and arrogance; maybe going over the line on occasion, then I don't want you as a pilot. Every pilot's answer, whether they want to admit it or not, is "ME!"

impossible to tell. Who is the best? everyone has his own opinion. The pilot who gets his passangers from there origin to theire destensation safley and efficently is the best in my book.
But I really liked Edwin Musick.

steve fossett, wiki this guy, see how many records he holds, or has broken in all different kinds of aircraft. Prior to Fossett's aviation records, no pilot had held world records in more than one class of aircraft; Fossett holds them in four classes. including the only nonstop solo circumnavigation of the world!!

This is really a matter of opinion...I personally think Bob Hoover ( he flies real planes...real low...and makes them do awesome things). I don't discount Yeager..he was good...but give Hoover a shot...He is awesome...a legend...and I don't think yeager can hold a candle to him when it comes to actually flying in the atmosphere...
