New Orleans is no more dangerous for tourists than any other large city. You are staying in the French Quarter which is busy with people and is patrolled by the police.
Just as you would not walk down a dark, unpopulated street at home, that would be the same here.
Come on down and have fun!

My husband and I are in the process of relocating to New Orleans from Houston and have heard sooooo many negative things about New Orleans from people who have NEVER EVEN BEEN TO THE CITY. It is beyond frustrating. Media has really made New Orleans seem much worse off than it actually is. Ever since we found out we were moving we have been back at least one weekend a month and have fallen in love with the city. We are so excited to be moving to a city filled with such history, culture, beauty....and FUN!

We have stayed in hotels in Metairie, the French Quarter and the Garden district over the past few months and have found ALL areas to be perfectly safe. We currently live in a suburb of Houston that is considered one of the safest around and feel no different over there than we do here. Of course, you must be smart and safe as you would anywhere you go. In Houston I don't walk alone at night, so why would I do it anywhere else?! Just use common sense which is sounds like you know plenty about already and enjoy your time and this wonderful place. :-)

PS...the people of New Orleans are, by far, some of the friendliest people I've ever been in contact with. Talk to some of the locals while you're there. They will charm the heck outta you!!

You should be just fine and safe as long as you stay around the tourist areas such as the French Quarter. As the others have said, just use your common sense, and don't walk dark streets by yourself at night. Don't wear lots of jewelry in public, and I'd avoid carrying a purse if possible while walking. The Riverwalk area, Harrah's Casino are all very safe areas. Come on and enjoy your visit.

If you walk in downtown Detroit, the French Quarter will be like suburbia! The French Quarter is full of people most of the time, whereas Detroit is all vacant and boarded-up. Come on down and have fun. It's gonna be 80 and sunny today!

Go! Have fun! Bring a map, because it is easy to get lost, but, like many people are saying, just use your common sense. You don't have to stay in the French Quarter the whole time. There is more to New Orleans than the FQ, lol. Oh, and while you're there, you can listen to 99.5 FM for traffic reports (plug, lol).

New Orleans is such a great place. Chances are I might see you there, because I go as often as I can. I'm not quite old enough to drink yet, but when I make 21, lookout! lol

French Quarter is REALLY safe. I think you will be ok. There are lots of murders here. However, most murders come from people that sell drugs to each other. No drugs, No problem. Also, I have not heard AT ALL about pic pocketing. That really does not happen a lot in the city. One last thing. I think most people that are telling you not to go have never lived hear.

N.O. is a great place to visit. The best thing is to stay at Harrahs casino hotel. It is safe there, there is always a lot of people around and security. they have a great concierge that is willing to help you around. Also every thing is within walking distance from there. The other thing is that you can win some money why your there and also get some comps for food and things. Its very easy to get a taxi from there. also there is a galleria mall right across the street from the casino. The room have great view and the suites are the best in town.

I agree with the previous answers. New Orleans is an awesome place to visit.. you should definitely come here! And Decatur is a busy street so it is relatively safe. You should obviously (as the others said) exercise caution but there is no more reason for concern here than anywhere else.
Have a good time!

I just came back from the French Quarter. I was out ALL the time and never had a problem and I never saw any crime. Like any other big city with alot of people..dont keep money in your back pocket. I had alot of fun and it would be a real shame if you listen to anyone who is trying to scare you. The French Quarter is like no other place in the world. GO!

It is a safe place IF you stay in the "tourist" places. These are the most heavily police patrolled. Just don't wander off on back streets, even in the daytime and don't leave the tourist spots and you will be just fine. There are a lot of places even us locals WONT go. Most of the crime in N.O. is confined to the "bad" neighborhoods and not directed against the tourists. About the worst trouble you could get into is messing with the police. They do not play. So be nice to them and do what they ask.
