I am currently going through the process with a law enforcement agency. I have done very well and passed all tests thus far. However, I recently (Tuesday evening) had a polygraph and failed ONE question having to do with illegal gambling. I've heard a million answers of whether I've passed or failed. They said they'd let me know - I have not heard ANYTHING from the Police Department (it's now Friday!). I have a test (BAT) scheduled at 8:00 in the morning! My papers say not to contact them. Should I call or email?? Will it be better to just wait? Is it a good sign that I haven't heard yet or bad news? I'm sooo confused!! Experienced answers please.......

Go take your test. Don't stress out about the polygraph. Good luck.

The reality is that you cannot actually fail a question asked by a polygrapher. You simply reacted to one with more stress than the others. This merely suggests, but does not prove that you have perhaps gambled illegally in the past. Don't woory about it until you are actually confronted with an accusation. Think about your answer and why it may have caused stress. If you can recall a situation that would make you second guess that particular question, you can relate this to a questioner who may ask. Don't volunteer information unless you are asked.

First learn about the test and the theories behind it. See citations below:

Eat, relax, think happy thoughts, listen to each question then without emotion reply Yes or No --- Ask for clarification of a loaded question.

Remember these "tests" cannot be used in a court of law so why should you trust them?

If you have a test scheduled for 8:00am go. You have not been told not to go so why would youo risk missing the test?

Relax. The illegal gambling is not a big deal. As long as it was not a large amount of money changing hands.

Take you test. If it says not to contact them - DON'T CONTACT THEM.

Until they tell you otherwise, assume that you have passed and are continuing on to the next stage of the process.
