Do seeds count as part of your daily dietary needs based on the 5 basic food groups pyramid? Depends on which pyramid you're looking at. Some only count meat as a food group. Others will count meat and beans as a food group, while there are other pyramids that will count meat, beans, nuts and seeds as one food group. But the 5-a-day thing isn't the only source of information as to how and where to get your nutrients from.

I think the 5-a-day food guide pyramid is a good theory and a good starting point, but it all depends on what you do with it. Yeah, meat is one of the 5 basic food groups, but if you ate nothing but red meat all day, you'd probably end up being pretty unhealthy.

Seeds pack a lot of nutrients. They're a good source of vitamin E, zinc, iron, calcium, protein, etc, etc. If you're basing your diet on the 5 basic food groups, seeds would be a good supplement to what you're eating, and add more variety to your diet, so your body will get all the nutrients it needs.
