The Sig is a pistol that your great grandchildren will inheret and still be able to shoot, assuming the libs and dems don't destroy our 2nd ammendment rights before then. The XD, while a fine pistol, simply won't last that long, after 40-50 years composites begin to degrade. You'll have more accuracy from a Sig, and the pistol is much better made than an XD. Spend the little extra cash, get the Sig, you'll be happier in the long run.

As a Gunsmith,Gun Shop Owner and Competitive Shooter you just can't do any better than the Sig Sauer. With all due respect to the gun industry, the XD is a decent gun for the money, but to be honest the only people that think the XD is best are those that have NEVER handled or shot a Sig Sauer P229, To compare the two is like comparing a Cadillac to a Volkswagen, not even a fair comparison. And just for the record Glock wouldn't even make my TOP 20 list to begin with.So we won't even go there..

Back to the subject at hand. A Sig Sauer as others here have already said will last you a lifetime, and without doubt they are one of the finest quality, accurate handguns made in the world today. I have carried one as a Police Detective for years and now carry a P228 as my concealed weapon of choice. The quality and performance can't be matched. I sell Sig's at a rate of about 6-1 over XD's if the customer isn't worrying about spending a few extra dollars for a true quality handgun. If cost is an issue, people tend to buy the less expensive XD.
I never quite understand after many years in the firearms trade why people would buy cheaper, rather than better quality.Especially if it's an investment in you or your families safety..If it were me I'd go without until I can buy something that is quality and going to last.....Just my opinion

First thing you need to consider is which one fits your hand better. SIG Sauers are awesome pistols but they have a rather large grip when compared to the XD. So while SIG Sauers will probably outlast an XD, if you can't hold it well or shoot it accurately then what's the point in spending all that money. I would rent both and shoot them before making your decision, but if that's not an option at least grip/handle and practice aiming both and make sure it feels comfortable in your hand. Good luck with your choice.

The Sig. is over priced. You get a great gun with the XD. Go for a .40 cal. It's a good mix of stopping power and capacity.

id go with the XD

every review on the gun has proven that it is an excellent firearm.

and ive never heard of polymers "breaking down" over time... its not wood, it doesn't rot.

any quality firearm will last if you take care of it.

the only thing the xd is lacking is a track record, they simply haven't been around long enough to prove themselves completely yet. but I'm confident that they will prevail.

price is always a factor when you buy anything, if its not... you have too much money. the XD is a great buy for the money.

the Sig is a great gun of course, but i cant justify the extra price.

All the good answers are already taken! Buy the Sig, the xd is fine for what it is, but the Sig will last you forever.

From what I hear, Sigs are great guns. I love my XDs. As for how long they last I could not tell you or how well the 229 shoots because I never shot one, but I will say both would be a good pick.

Buy the Sig, though I don't like the DAK variant myself.

JD, you know guns but you don't know cars, or at least you need to update your metaphor. A modern VW will go 200k miles with minimal problems, a modern Cadillac will be on the scrap heap long before then.

SIG Sauer make the best pistol in the world.
The XD is a good pistol.

If you can budget the SIG, you will never, ever regret it.

I'll be darned, the Springfield XD is a TOTAL Glock knock off. What do they go for??? Remember, you get what you pay for!

I have the Glock G22 and G27 in .40 cal and they are both tough as heck and have lasted for years, easy to clean, smooth, rounded slide, and no external safeties to snag for concealed carry.

You can't go wrong with Sig and their tight tolerances and great reputation. I just laughed at the Springfield XD when I saw it. Did I mention Glock knock off??? They also have an MP5 knock off, but I am unfamiliar with their manufacturing and performance.

The XD ambidextrus mag release might be an issue, as you don't want to drop your clip under stress firing and tight gripping. If it is like my Glocks, it will be barrel/ front heavy, until a loaded clip is in, then it balances nicely.

The Sig has external safeties which could be fumbled with in a tense situation, PANIC!!! Is the safety on/off??? The .357 sig is a unique caliber...good to see 9mm losing its following! Check ammo availability for it in your area.

I say if you are going to spend $700+, save some $$$ and buy a Glock. I have a small child in the house, so the guns are high out of reach, never one in the chamber, she can't rack the slide, so "No extra safeties" is a weak argument. Just be a responsible parent/ gun owner and no one gets hurt.

These are my opinions on Sig, Springfield XD, and my favorite...Glock!

Good luck in your decision!
