I have a friend Renee who told me back in the 70’s when she was a young woman, she would drive cars cross country because the owners would move and pay her to drive their cars to their location. Does anybody know about that? Does anyone know if that still goes on now? If it does, is there a specific website I can go to? I am very interested in taking a road trip but don’t feel like driving to my vacation destination and drive back to my location. I want to drive one way and fly back, or vice versa and renting a car is way too expensive.

I have heard that some rental companies have so many more cars going one way than the other that they actually pay for people driving them back.
But I do not know if this is the truth, nor if this would be the case where you are living.
But you could contact the rental companies in your area and ask about the different possibilities.
Do not talk with the sales person, as one of the staff at car hand-in point. The will often know these things, as they are the most likely people to be asked to drive the cars to the other depots.

I'm sure some people still do this but not as much as it used be done mainly due to liability. As someone else said you could start your own business doing it but I don't think it would be very profitable since these days people can rent a truck and move not only their car but other belongings at the same time or pay a transport company less than one person who can only drive one car at a time. You would need references to show you are reliable, insurance to cover you in any car and probably bonded to cover your personally and that would cost quite a bit of money.

Instead of looking for someone to pay you to drive their car for them you might look for someone who is planning on driving to your destination and wants some company and someone to share driving and gas, motel room that sort of thiing on a split the cost sort of deal. OR get several people together and split the cost of a rental car, even at $50.00 a day split 4 was isnt bad.

You can try craigslist but be careful about who you meet, look under gigs or make a post yourself looking for this sort of thing, there is a rideshare section also.

Ofcourse it is happening. You need to make your own website and start your own business in this.
