let's say you're a healthy adult in your fifties. you have a son in his twenties who is in need of heart transplant. the only match available is yours. would you end your life to save his? technically this is suicide. if you believe in god, you must believe that he has decided that it is not your time to die yet and that it is time for your son to die. how would you rationalize suicide in an event like this? or would not even consider giving your life to save a loved one?

suicide - the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally especially by a person of years of discretion and of sound mind

it's not hypothetical, it happens all the time. it's a very real situation. it might not be happening to you. i'd say hypothetical are the questions that keep getting asked like, "atheists, what will you say when you stand before god?" or maybe the question is just pathetical... (i know the word is pathetic)

daniel d, it goes against self preservation. that is not the same thing as survival of a species. if your instinct is to propogate the species, then it is in your best interest to keep the youngest alive, since they are more capable or reproducing.

To save my son?
In a heartbeat, so to speak...

No. To be perfectly honest I wouldn't. That may seem heartless to some, but it's only the natural instinct for survival and self-preservation. Suicide goes against this instinct.
Just curious:
I completely disagree. It doesn't mean just a species as a whole, it refers to it's individual members as well. How many animals in nature do you see sacrificing themselves for their offspring? I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but the instinct is there, whether it means an entire species or an individual member.
Just Curious:
I have to admit that after a few hours of considering what you mentioned, as well as reading other posts on this topic, I've changed my mind about it. It would be more noble to save your child's life instead of one's own. This is why I like these forums. You can get feedback and perspectives on things and ideas which one hasn't considered or thought of before. Peace. :-)

Christ allowed himself to be sacrificed without a fight in order for us mere imperfect humans to gain life and salvation. It wasn't suicide...there's a big difference.
If I would give my life for my child? Yes in a heart beat! And I'll do it all over again if I could.

wow that is a tough one!! I do have a son that is 13mos old, so thinking about the scenario seems real, I guess not something I'd like to think about. But my answer would have to be yes, I would save his life even if it meant to end mine.

1) i don't think God is standing up in heaven going "it's your turn to die, but you stay. and let's have a hurricane here to kill all these people..." he gave us earth and free will. we take it from there.
2) i would gladly give my life for my children. it God can't understand a mother's love, then he's not the God i thought he was...

No, I would not. But I would try to rescue someone for example from fire even if it means that I might lose my own life in the process.

Suicide is, inherently, a selfish act....and is in no way self-sacrifice.
No amount of mental gymnastics can get one out of that bind.

Yes. Easy question.
There are some religions that forbid things like this, but I think that is nonsense.

I don't believe in any god. I would give my heart to my son because he deserves a chance to live a healthy life like I did.
I believe in karma and maybe it's my son's karma that he almost dies, but I am able to save him. And my karma is that I am able to give him life...again.
