I lived most of my life in Maine. Maine is a great place in that there is a lot of diversity with both religious and nonreligious people but not a lot of on your sleeve and in everyone's face type religion. I lived in Idaho for a few years. I moved to Austria six months ago though. Catholicism is the main religion here. For many it is a serious and sincere belief system but for just as many its more of a cultural tradition than anything else. People aren't pushy or in your face about it. They are pretty accepting of other's beliefs or nonbeliefs. I haven't had anyone be offended or avoid me yet if the subject came up and I told them I'm not religious at all.

I live in North Carolina in the Bible Belt as well. I only know about two or three atheists or agnostics in real life, probably because of where I live. The remainder of my friends are Christians, or at least identify themselves as such. Many other people here who live in more 'liberal' states have many atheist, agnostic, or non Christian friends, though.
I asked a similar question last week because I have so few friends that share my religious beliefs and was curious if other atheists have friends that share their beliefs (or lack there of):

Do you mean, you were raised in Okla? I'm from Ohio, and I really don't know anyone who would actually admit to being an atheist. You never know what people are mulling through their minds, though. Had a sister-in-law who was on the verge of that, until she was in the hospital and her heart stopped 5 times in one day. She called me from the hospital when she was able, and said she saw angels dancing around her bed, holding hands, and asked what it meant. She lived 5 years after that, and she was a believer after that!
