Anemia may be caused by multiple factors. The most common causes of anemia tend to be related to diet, which include factors such as low iron or B-12 levels.
Anemia may also be caused by inherited traits that govern the red blood cell's ability to carry oxygen. Examples of these inherited diseases are sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Anemia may also be caused by end stage renal disease or chronic renal disease due to the loss of EPO production (the chemical in the body secreted by the kidney that stimulates red blood cell production). Cancer treatment can also cause anemia by killing RBCs.
The dietary causes of anemia are almost never fatal in developed countries. Anemia can contribute to mortality in developing countries where treatment and nutritional services are less available. Typically the only morbidity you will have will be drops in energy. The non-dietary causes of anemia do carry higher rates of mortality and the treatment of anemia has I significant affect on disease progression and quality of life.

Anemia is when you have a low count of red blood cells or low hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is the pigment in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to all of the other cells of your body. Anemia can indeed be life-threatening.
It can also increase mortality when other problems are involved, such as heart disease or kidney ailments.
The most common causes are iron, vitamin B-12 and folic acid deficiencies. --RN
