It's not that the country requires 6 months. It's the airlines prefer it. I flew to Thailand with less than 6 months once from the USA and I signed a waiver since I was returning within 7 days and I had a return ticket. No questions were asked when I entered. This was July 2005, my passport expired October 2005.

The Thai Immigration may reject your entry. They will ask you to extend your passport before arriving or you will be put through much paperworks to waste your day on arrival. Best to get a new passport . And this is a standard requirement when traveling to many overseas destinations.

Its not convenient for you to have to explain to the authorities at both the departure and arrival airports each time- remember that you open yourself to arbitrary interpretation by offialdom then. Surely you can pre renew you passport with no loss of validity date? Its worth the effort.
