i've found that there are many fundamentalist christians who get offended at the idea that humans are animals. why is this? aside from higher brain functions which is evident throughout the rest of the animal kingdom, i.e. chimps have higher brain functions than dogs, are we any less an animal than any other animal?

To quote someone who e-mailed me, man has always wanted to be a god.

Religious superstition allows people to pretend they are somehow better than other animals. This is part of the emotional appeal of religion.

Project ENCODE is now doing research on the so called junk DNA (98+% of the human genome, 75% of which contains pseudogenes). It has been found that humans have deactivated amphibian genes, something one would predict by evolution. However, these include genes, which in amphibians can re-grow retinal cells, re-grow midbrain cells, re-grow spinal column connectivity after injury. etc. This holds great medical promise for the future. So how will a blind fundamentalist Christian feel after his sight is restored by "reactivating" some of his amphibian genes?

If you believe in evolution, which I do not, you must then believe that Humans are the last to develop, then why are humans the only animals to have developed to such an extent? many animals have language, and it all cant not be the thumb.
