Boehme writes," The written Word is only an instrument wherewith the Spirit leads. The Spirit must be alive in the literal form. Without this there can be no Divine teacher, but onl teachers of letters; only reciters of stories." Your comments?

He is correct in the context of which he is speaking. Without God's help to understand the Bible, it can be just words and rules. You see it all the time here on YA, where people quote a line of scripture with no understanding of its meaning.

But he is not saying (and I have read other works by him so I know something of his theology) that the Bible is only words or has no power in itself. Even without the guidance of the Spirit, there are many moral and spirituals truths that can be learned from it pages. But it is the presence of God that changes them from merely "principles" to the source of life itself.

Mark Twain said it well when he wrote, "It is not the parts of the Bible I don;t understand that bother me, its the parts I do".

I believe the people who get caught up in the minutia of the specifics of the religion are reading the words without the "Spirit." The Spirit leads us to do what is right, not the words, but the Word.
