I think you could make a case for either reason why Team Hughes has lost 6 in a row on the Ultimate Fighter. First of all, alot of his guys seem to be very shredded, bodybuilder types but without alot of fighting ability. They have impressive physiques but lack that killer instinct. They probably spend more time lifting weights and looking in the mirror than fighting. On the other hand, it may be that Hughes isn't a very good coach and spends more time picking on them rather than teaching them how to fight. Hughes seems to run his team through intimidation while Sera runs his through mutual respect and genuine care for his fighters. What do you think?

Coaching and fighting are two very different things. To be honest, i think that Matt serra's coaching is probably top notch. He has much more experience teaching that matt hughes does. He owns two Bjj schools in New York, and was on the ultimate fighter before (this gives him a very clear perspective of what it takes to win). Also Serra seems like he is a real likeable guy. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with him. On the other hand, there have been numerous complaints regarding Matt Hughes' attitude, and this is not conducive for a successful training team. Even look at the training sessions- Hughes roughs his guys up for not winning (even injures Barrera's hand) and puts added pressure on them and that, for most people, is not what they need. Maybe Serra picked some better guys, but i would be willing to bet that his coaching style and experience, top notch bjj expertise, ultimate fighter experience, and personality help out his fighters a lot.

hughes has an astounding record. that said he is a douchebag. like mac danzig said, hughes is more concerned about his ego and is taking it out on his fighters. serra is more grounded and relaxed in his training. hughes' team seems to be on eggshells around him and he is pissing them off. hughes is def. a good coach but none of it is coming through. maybe he is more successful with fighters who have more experience. and he made a mistake by thinking that all the jacked guys will be the best fighters cuz definition of muscles is not a deciding factor in the octagon.
jrock is def. a good fighter but he got caught. and hughes storms off instead of comforting him. he is a jerk. thats not the way a coach should act. and him saying that barerra was scared was wrong too. being a fighter is not easy and he did a great job in there. and when he sparred with barerra and nearly broke his hand that was too rough. the guy's hand was twice the size and his fingers were completely black. he could have prevented him from fighting. criticizing his remaining two fighters who had even fought yet was stupid too.
but honestly who are some of these clowns that have made it on the show? they don't belong there and next season i don't wanna see any *** jockeys.
the guy is not being a good coach on the show but from what i hear he actually is a good coach.

Hughes is a very good fighter. But as a coach I'm less than impressed. He reminds me of Ken Shamrock from season 3 thinks his name will make these guys good. NOT!! Matt Serra is an excellent coach and teaches his guys very well and it shows As for the talent its about even on both sides this where the difference shows between Serra and Hughes. Serra is head and shoulders above Hughes when it comes to teaching. And rite now that's exactly what those fighters need to get to the next level. TEACHING!

I think that they are somewhat less experienced and that's one of the reasons for why the fights have gone the way they have. All but one have lost in the first round and all by knockout except for one choke out if I remember correctly and one fight went the distance. A couple of those fights should have gone longer than one round and the lack of experience as well as them not following their fight plan like they should has been a contributing factor. From the limited time you see that the coaches have with their fighters it is hard to tell if Hughes is not a good coach. I think it may be more of a lack of communication. The way you relate to and coach a fighter with little or no experience is different than the way you relate to and coach a fighter that has ten or fifteen fights. In my opinon more of the problem lies with the lack of experience of his fighters and them not listening, hearing what he is saying, and the way he says it due to this lack of expereince as well and he as the coach has to shift gears or change the way he is saying it or you have what you have now.

I do think that you are right in that Serra uses some different skills and skill sets in coaching, communicating, and managing his fighters that Hughes is not using.

There is no denying Hughes ability in the octagon, but Serra is clearly the better coach. I think if the teams were swapped, you would have much different results in the fights. Just my opinion, but i have watched Hughes coach twice now, and when Serra was a fighter, he basically was a coach too. Hughes team doesnt suck, just a lousy coach

To be honest, they're the two a splash prickish. Matt Hughes is greater of a jack@$$ often, and Matt Serra is an superb guy to maximum human beings, yet to be honest, he's long previous a splash overboard together with his grievance of Hughes. And to the guy that reported that Hughes hasn't badmouthed Serra, asserting that the Champion on your branch "have been given fortunate" or "isn't good 10" is badmouthing him. Hughes is the common boastful jock, and Serra in all danger does have a splash (pardon the pun) little guy's complicated. it fairly is a splash of the two.

I guess nobody here saw Season 2?

His fighters haven't been listening. He was right about his yelling this week, Dan fought scared (and stupid), and Paul should have taken it to the ground. However, with the exception of Mac (who's starting to turn on him now too), his fighters haven't been responding well to his style. His season 2 squad (excluding Stevenson, who's just an incredible talent) bought into his aggressive motivation. Nobody thought Burkman could beat Melvin, nobody thought Jason could beat Jorge, but they did.

I think it's just that the fighters getting on the show nowadays aren't as into it as the older seasons. Paul saying he didn't want to get hit because of his engineering career, Richie talking about the 5k he wanted. Guys like Forrest, Stephan, Diego, KenFlo, Koscheck, Joe Daddy, Cummo, Bisping, Evans, and even Josh Haynes have fought their asses off to get to where they are. Haynes might not have alot of talent, but he's probably got more raw heart than anyone who's ever been on TUF. If you can't appreciate his showing against Rory Singer, you need to check your pulse. Other than Mac, I don't see any other guy really wanting to go pro. Hughes needs guys with heart to go out there and give it their all. Only Mac has really done that for him.

I have met Matt Hughes. I think he is a great guy. They try to make him look like a dick on TV because he is cocky and likes to get under peoples skin. I think his team has lost because they were not good fighters and did not follow hughes game plan. I think the only good fighter in the show is Mac Danzig and maybe War machine.

alot of the guys on the show on both teams are very unexperienced, less then fights or so....so it isnt that I think Matt pushes them so hard it hurts them mentally and they lose track of the fight, they lose focus they are so worried win win win that they lose, I think Serras guys are relaxed
