It would appear that yes, there was organized religion before Christ came to Earth. It has been mentioned in the Bible in the book of Genesis that there was an angel that was with Adam in the Garden of Eden. Some believe this angel to be Jesus. But it is unclear and open for interpretation. We don't really get to Jesus being mentioned by name until the New Testament, although people believe that it was Him that walked with Adam in the Garden and that Jacob wrestled with. In the book of Deuteronomy is when the laws of God were set into place which became known as Judaism. So I guess it is really how you look at things found in the Bible. Some credit Judaism as being the first form of organized religion... But then others say that Jesus has been here the entire time...

no there were many religions b4 jesus and the story of jesus has totally been ripped of the sun god horus. and Horus was a story that helped egyptions remember special events in the stars like the 25th of december Xmas is actually the date when the days start getting longer and summer is on the way. on that date orions belt the star constellation (or in some cultures known as the 3 wise men) points to the brightest star in the all our skies ( the morning star) Now you remember the story of jesus birth 3 wise men followed a bright star which led them to the saviour( Summer)

(1) It is written that both Horus and Jesus existed before their incarnations.
(2) Horus was born of the virgin Isis on December 25th in a cave/manger.
(3) Horus' birth was announced by a star in the East and attended by three wise men.
(4) The infant Horus was carried out of Egypt to escape the wrath of Typhon. The infant Jesus was carried into Egypt to escape the wrath of Herod. Concerning the infant Jesus, the New Testament states the following prophecy: "Out of Egypt have I called my son." (Matt. 2:15)

(5) He was a child teacher in the temple and was baptized by “Anup the Baptizer” when he was thirty years old.

(6) He had twelve disciples and performed miracles such as feeding bread to the multitude and walking on water.

(7) He raised one man, El-Azar-us, from the dead.
(8) He transfigured on a mount.
(9) He also had titles such as the "way, the truth, the light, the Messiah, God's anointed Son, the Son of Man, the good shepherd, the lamb of God, the Word, the Morning Star, the light of the world.”

(10) He was "the Fisher," and was associated with the lamb, lion and fish ("Ichthys").
(11) Horus's personal epithet was "Iusa," the "ever-becoming son" of "Ptah," the "Father."
(12) Horus was called "KRST," or "Anointed One.”
(13) He was crucified, buried in a tomb and resurrected.

You have probably heard the story of the blind men who wanted to see an elephant. Each one felt a different part of the elephant (the ear which was like a fan, or the trunk which was like a snake, or the leg which was like a tree trunk, or the tail which was like a snake). Each came away with some information about the elephant, but none of them understood the whole thing.

Through history God has been revealing himself to every culture and in every religion. That is why there are so many similarities between the different religions. Such as most having a "golden rule" like command, moral laws, blood sacrifices, etc. They were all getting information from the same God. But none of them got the whole picture.

Even in the Bible, you will see a progressive revelation. Noah only have seven commandments, not the 10 commandments of Moses who came later. Abraham brought in circumcision, which was unknown before his time. David brought in temple worship and musicians. Each build on the knowledge of the "blind men" before. Each helping to complete a picture of who God is, one revelation at a time.

Everything those earlier people recorded about God is correct. But they did not understand it all yet. Kind of like the way math was discovered. Each generation building on the knwledge of the previous ones. Like the Greeks had to invent fractions before anyone could come up with decimals.

God has been revealing himself to every culture, looking for the one that would finally get it all "right". So there on truths on each of those religions.

The Bible (see the first three chapters of the book of Romans) talks about how before Jesus came, each person was judged by their conscience. How sincerely did they follow the understand they did have of God? They were not judged on their works, but rather on their heart. Were they seeking him? Where they following what they did know? If the whole thing had been told to them, would they have accepted it?

It took 1500+ years to get all the pieces of the "elephant" put together, to reveal all the details people would need to be able to recognize the Messiah, and to understand what his life, death and resurrection were all about. At that point, what the Bible called "the fullness of time" - when everything was ready - God was finally able to come as the man Jesus Christ.

In human form, he lived a perfect life using nothing but the tools available to every human (prayer, faith, fasting, the infilling of the Holy Spirit, etc), and then gave that life so that the same perfect life could be imparted to others. He gave the final and complete revelation of who God is and how to relate to him.

Now that the full revelation has come, and most people have heard it, they are now judged by their acceptance or rejection of the whole message. So to have heard (in a clear and understandable way) the message of Christ, and rejected it for another religion, would make you a follower of a false religion. If you have not (clearly and understandably) heard the whole message, then you can still be judged by the religion or message you have heard. You would be judged by the "truth" in that religion. They all have some truth, just not all truth.

There is "truth" in all religions, but you only find the whole "elephant", all the parts put properly together, in the Christian faith.

Actually Different places had different cultures and different beliefs. The Greeks had Mythology. Romans had God and there own version of Catholism. But In Egypt they believed in Sun Gods and they had many "magicians" and many different Gods. There were the Isrealites who believed Jesus was coming and he was the Savior and they followed Moses out of Isreal. There was King David and King Solomon who also believed in God and that jesus his son was the savior. Moses and Abraham and even Noah.He is one of the First accounts that told everyone to listen to the word of god and that something was coming and everyone laughed at him and sure enough we had he flood. Moses had the ten commandments which was a structure for religion and todays morals. Christians were actually Jews before the Death of Christ. Because when Christ was Killed he was Killed by his own People, the Jews, That is why Jew deny the fact Jesus ever exisited and after that gods followers were no longer considered jews.
At that time there are accounts of actual miracles and encounters with God because those people were closer to Perfection. We not could not handle the sight of God. But yes there was plenty of religion and Christianity because they were waiting for the coming of Christ.

Actually there was a lot of religion before Christ. In fact, God had a people - Israel. Think about Moses, how he led God's people out of Egypt. They worshipped the true God. But then, they messed up and started worshipping the golden calf, and the other gods of Egypt. In Daniel's day, the Babylonians worshipped many diferent Gods. That's why Daniel was thrown into the lion's den, because he refused to worship that way. There has always been religion.

I always like the way James defined religion:

"Religion that God the Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world".

I prefer we avoid vain discussion about which religion is "real" and start practicing "real" religion instead!

Jesus' followers were first talked about as "followers of ways." It changed into in Antioch a couple of minutes later (at the same time as the Europeans were nonetheless beating one yet another to lack of life with animal bones) that Christ-followers were first talked about as Christians, at the same time as the apostles Paul and Barnabas were planting churches there. Jesus himself turned right into a Jew and practiced His personal variety of Judaism. He changed into the superb reformer.

Every religion is "real". Therefore, yes, there had been plenty of "real" religions before Christianity. I'm sure if you asked the Mayans whether their gods were true their answer would be "yes, they're the only true gods". That's how it goes...

There are two types of religion.

Manmade religion is man centred and all about our efforts to try and reach God- like pilgrimage, prayer, fasting, knocking on doors (!).

God centred religion is that which relies on him for salvation. So before Christ there were those who were looking forward to a Messiah who would be their righteousness before God.

And then Christ came and said "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No-one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6).

Its an exclusive claim but its also liberating- because it reveals that we can be reconciled to a God who is wrathful towards our sinfulness, through Christ.
