All international travel will require you to have a passport, there are no exceptions.

In regards to visas, you should check the websites for the countries embassy which you wish to travel to.

How about the Northern Territories round Darwin or northern Queensland?
If you fly you will still need a photo identification, I think, but no passport nor visa.
