Yep! She's a GSD/Golden Retriever mix... I make sure I'm scratching her too so she at least thinks I'm petting her. :)
She, however, hugs me:

Especially when she's wet and/or muddy.

I hug my dog. I give her a kiss on the top of her head too. I don't know if she knows what it "means" per say, but she knows she's getting attention (and she loves getting attention).
I also massage her ears. And rub her stomach. And I get my face right up in her face and talk to her.
I want her to be comfortable with being touched all over. Both to make grooming and vet visits easier, and also because I know I'll most likely have children within the lifespan of the dog, so I want the dog to okay with things I know children will do.
My dog is a papillon.

When I had my dog Ohala. I would hug him once in a while. He would go crazy and wouldn't let me do it all the time. He was a black lab. I didn't ever kissed him because he had stinky breath. I did give him a kisses on his forehead. Offcourse animals can sense the love you have for them. I don't know if they necessarily know that we are hugging them but they know it is a act of love.

They are not like your kids! As they get older....they don't want Kisses from their Mommy :( LOL

Yes I hug my dog and he hugs me back. I also give my dog lots of kisses that are returned to me two-fold. My dog is a pit bull and his name is Tre'. I personally think anyone that does not give their dog any form of affection should not have one in the first place. Just keep loving your dog and he will sure return the favor

yes i do hug my dog and kiss him. i work 5 times a week and i'm away most of the day. when i come home, all i do is eat and sleep so i try to give as much snuggle time with my dog as i can on my days off. he's very responsive when i snuggle him up. he tries to hug back. he thinks that he can use his 2 front paws as hands like i do. when i stand around, he would come up to me and put his head under my hand... sorta' asking to pet his head.. haha! very funny and cute
he's a beige pitbull named BAILEY

I hug my dogs, but it's actually quite a rude gesture in doggie language. If a dog is scared it's not a good idea to hug them.
