We just got a condo dirt cheap, it was built in 1984 and per the city due to being after 1980 does not have asbestos in the popcorn ceiling. What is the best way for us to remove the popcorn? I don't want to place sheetrock over it and thought of a tin ceiling but don't have the time to shop for them.Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks to all of you...no we haven't moved a single thing in yet, so that will be one less hassle!

Actually, the process is an easy one. Messy, but easy. First, get some thin plastic, masking tape, a taping knife (flat and flexible blade), and a "bug sprayer" from you local home improvement joint. Cover everything, then mask off the walls just below the ceiling. Fill the sprayer with warm water, then spray the popcorn lightly and let the water soak in. if you do this a couple of times, when you scrape the ceiling with the taping knife, the popcorn will fall off easily and effortlessly. Just be careful not to over soak the ceiling. Using water also helps eliminate nasty dust problems that happen when scraping "dry". Hope that helps.

It's easy, but messy, to remove a popcorn ceiling. The best way I've found, and I've done this A LOT, is to use a spray bottle to slightly dampen the surface. Then use a plastic putty knife, the wider the better, to gently get under the coating and scrape it off. You'll need to sand the surface and then use some Bin or Kilz primer to seal it before you repaint. Good luck!

You might try vacuuming it with a shop vac and see how much you can get off that way. The house I'm in now has the popcorn ceiling and I made the mistake of trying to vacuum the dust from around the A/C vents. Sucked that popcorn right off! Maybe you could get that lucky!

Pre prepared/ It's a hard job. Over the head and messy is an understatement. I did it and if I had to do it again I would have removed and started over with new sheetrock

If you haven't moved in then scrape it off yourself or have it done professionally. If you have moved in, then you are going to have one big mess....We scraped ours ourselves.
